A recent press release from the state house official website
NigeriaFirst entitled
Vice President Commends British Council.
This is all about the assistance the British council is giving to Nigerian Universities to help improve.
Vice President Atiku said the Federal Government was very concerned about the standard of Nigerian Universities and has expended a lot money to bring the universities to an appreciable standard, from the rot inherited by the past administration.
Now Check this out
The ABTI-American Concept (ABTI-American University of Nigeria-YOLA- Belonging to the VP)
AAUN is intended to be the first world-class university in West Africa and will be one of the premier universities on the continent. It will be a career-oriented institution with the goal of meeting the employment needs of students and the demand by local and international employers for highly trained staff. All students, regardless of academic specialty, will receive extensive training in information technology. Upon arrival, every student will receive a laptop computer, complete with essential software. Wireless, high-speed Internet access will be available everywhere on campus, indoors and out. Every student will learn the principles of entrepreneurship so that, regardless of major, they will be prepared to achieve personal prosperity and to contribute to the economic development of the region. AAUN will be free of the disruptions and interruptions to the academic year too often seen at other Nigerian universities. The University will have its own independent electricity and water supply. As a premier African university, AAUN will provide the skills and the leadership essential to solving the continent’s pressing social and economic problems.
This ABTI-American University in Yola sounds like a good a good place.
So when we try to imagine re-investment in Nigerian universities, is this where the government is expending a lot of money, to bring it to appreciable standards or Is the government refering to places like Gwags! (Univeristy of Abuja Gwagwaladan)
Who wants to hear this long speech when, the reality is...
Nigerians applying to UK universities for admissions are at a record high.
(the british council also promotes the lucrative business of overseas studies.
they provide all the current information for Nigerians looking to gain admission into UK universities)
Private universities in Nigeria are generally expensive and any place like Gwags for now ,is no institution .
What do these agencies hope to achieve when they publish this B$@#&&&*!
Just forget it!. If you doubt me, send your Kid to Gwags....

There is no arguement that the Nigerian Universities system has collapsed and in a state of decay. And for an American Styled of University such as AAUN to be established in this part of Africa is a welcome developement. I think the best solution for our current university is privitisation. We should emphasise quality education or nothing else. I would continue to up-hold that university education is not a welfare organisation and in fact, it must have been a very big mistake for university tuition to be free in the very first place.
Well, Gigi, thanks for this blog. It gives room for me to air my view. It is not that there are double standard. It is just that if one system does not work any more, then we try another. That is it.
